Appendix F: Human Nature and the Healing of Trust
(For inclusion in The Bible Restored Project)
1. Sacred Principle
From the beginning, the Scriptures declare that humanity was created very good — fashioned in the image of God, meant for life, trust, and stewardship of creation.
Sin — the breaking of trust with God — entered later, but it did not erase the original goodness and beloved identity of humanity.
Later doctrines, especially the idea of an inherited "sin nature" or total depravity, overemphasized human evil and obscured God's original purpose: to heal, restore, and renew what was broken — not to discard or despise humanity.
The Bible Restored project faithfully recovers the sacred view of humanity: wounded but still carrying the image of God, called back to trust, wholeness, and life.
2. Humanity’s Original Design
Genesis 1:26-27 — Humanity made in God's image and likeness.
Genesis 1:31 — "God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good."
Psalm 8 — Humanity crowned with glory and honor.
Humanity was designed for:
Relationship with God,
Stewardship of creation,
Life, trust, and creativity.
3. What Went Wrong: Broken Trust (Sin)
Genesis 3 — The first rupture was a breach of trust:
Listening to lies,
Doubting God's goodness,
Acting independently from God's life.
Sin = Broken trust, rebellion against God's life and love.
Important: Sin damaged humanity’s relationship with God, self, others, and creation — but did not erase the image of God.
4. Later Misunderstandings: "Sin Nature" and "Total Depravity"
The idea that humans are born utterly evil or guilty comes largely from Augustine (4th century AD) and later Western theology.
Scripture teaches we inherit mortality and brokenness, but not guilt for Adam’s sin.
Romans 5:12 — "Death spread to all men because all sinned" — Not that guilt is inherited, but that mortality and sin entered the human condition.
Ezekiel 18:20 — "The son shall not bear the guilt of the father."
5. The Healing of Trust: The True Gospel
Jesus came not just to forgive sins, but to heal the broken trust between humanity and God.
John 3:16 — Whoever trusts (not just believes intellectually) will have life of the age to come.
Luke 19:10 — "The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
Romans 5:1 — "We have peace with God through trust in our Lord Jesus."
The real restoration is reconnection — life flowing once again from God to humanity.
6. Humanity's Dignity Is Restored
Through Jesus, humans are restored to their intended dignity:
Children of God,
Image-bearers,
Co-heirs with the Anointed One (Romans 8:17).
God's goal is not simply to rescue us from punishment, but to restore us into vibrant, trusting, creative partnership with Him.
7. Sacred Conclusion
Humanity is not trash needing disposal — we are treasure needing restoration.
God’s image in humanity was never destroyed, only obscured. The mission of Jesus is not to replace humanity, but to heal it, purify it, and restore it to its original purpose.
Broken trust is healed through renewed trust. Death is overcome by life. Darkness is driven out by light.
This is the true hope of redemption.
