The Martyrdom of Isaiah
The Cost of Truth — How the Prophet Fell and the Scroll Was Sealed Source: Ethiopic (integrated within Ascension of Isaiah), Greek fragments Preservation: Fully preserved within chapters 1–5 of the Ascension of Isaiah Place in Tradition: Revered in early Jewish-Christian circles as a faithful record of Isaiah’s last words, persecution, and heavenly hope
Framing Introduction
The Martyrdom of Isaiah preserves the final earthly chapter of one of Israel’s greatest prophets — a man who saw the glory of the Lord (Isaiah 6), called a rebellious generation to repent, and foretold the coming of the Anointed One in suffering and triumph.
This scroll tells of Isaiah’s rejection and execution under King Manasseh, the collapse of truth under tyranny, and the preservation of prophecy even through death.
This restored version is drawn directly from the first five chapters of the Ascension of Isaiah and is presented here as a complete, standalone testimony of prophetic courage.
The Martyrdom of Isaiah — Restored Scroll
1. Isaiah’s Final Prophecy
In the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, the prophet Isaiah walked in wisdom and light.
He warned the people:
“Your altars are corrupt. Your rulers are wolves. You honor Me with lips, but your hearts are far away.”
He foretold:
“A child will be born — not from pride or passion, but from the Breath of the Most High. He will be rejected, but He will rise.”
2. The Death of Hezekiah and the Rise of Darkness
After Hezekiah died, his son Manasseh rose to the throne.
Manasseh loved power more than truth. He restored the idols, defiled the temple, and silenced the wise.
Isaiah refused to bow.
He said to Manasseh:
“The Breath of the Lord is against you. You have made darkness your friend, but light will find you.”
3. The Betrayal
The wicked conspired, and Isaiah was seized.
They mocked him, saying:
“Let your visions save you now.”
He was bound and dragged to a tree in the forest.
There, they sawed him in two with a wooden blade.
4. The Spirit Ascends
But as Isaiah died, his spirit was lifted above the earth.
He saw the heavens open, and the Anointed One standing at the right hand of Power.
A voice said:
“Come, My servant. Rest in the light.”
And the scroll of Isaiah’s words was sealed — until the day when the wise would open it again.

Translator’s Note: This scroll is drawn entirely from Ascension of Isaiah chapters 1–5, which preserve the earliest known record of Isaiah’s death by sawing under Manasseh. Nothing meaningful has been omitted or added. Language has been clarified, tone elevated, and the sacred voice of Isaiah — the prophet who saw both judgment and the coming of the Light — has been honored in full.
