3 Enoch - Hebrew Enoch - Sefer Hekhalot
This mystical text, written in the early centuries CE, recounts the ascent of Rabbi Ishmael, who encounters the exalted Enoch — now transformed into the radiant heavenly being Metatron.
Chapters 1–5: The Ascent of Rabbi Ishmael and the Revelation of Metatron
———
I, Rabbi Ishmael, once entered into the inner chambers of the heavenly places,
drawn upward by the word of the Most High.
The Set-Apart Spirit lifted me above the firmament,
past the veil that separates the seen from the unseen.
As I rose, I was met by angelic ministers,
messengers of flame, who serve the Eternal One in holiness.
They said to me, “Welcome, child of man,
for the Master of Glory has summoned you.”
———
And I looked, and saw the Chariot of the Most High,
resting upon wheels of fire and surrounded by voices like thunder.
The four living creatures moved as one,
and each face shone with the light of a thousand stars.
Above them was a firmament of crystal,
and above it, the Throne of Glory.
My soul trembled within me,
but the breath of the Set-Apart One calmed my heart.
———
Then I was led before the prince of the presence,
a radiant being clothed in garments of fire.
His face was like lightning,
and his eyes like the dawn of creation.
The messengers said,
“This is Metatron,
the one who was taken from among men —
the scribe of the Most High,
once called Enoch, son of Jared.”
And I marveled, for he had been made
like the messengers who dwell in holiness.
———
Then Metatron spoke, and said:
“When the generation of the flood turned from righteousness,
I was taken from among men.”
“The Most High called me by name,
and set me above the firmament.”
“He clothed me in robes of glory,
and placed me among the messengers of His face.”
“He gave me seventy names,
and caused me to sit upon a throne near His own —
not as an equal, but as a servant honored.”
“I was appointed to record the deeds of men,
and to make intercession for the righteous.”
———
Metatron continued:
“Though I dwell in light,
I do not exalt myself.”
“For there is none like the Most High,
and His glory cannot be measured.”
“The messengers cover their faces before Him,
and the stars hide in silence when He speaks.”
“I am but a servant —
a witness to His greatness,
a scribe of His mercy,
a messenger of His justice.”
Rabbi Ishmael ascends into the heavenly realms, welcomed by messengers of fire.
He sees the Chariot of the Most High and the Throne of Glory, echoing Ezekiel and Isaiah.
He meets Metatron, who reveals that he is Enoch transformed — taken, glorified, and commissioned as heaven’s scribe.
Despite his exalted role, Metatron testifies with humility, pointing all glory back to the Eternal One.
Metatron reveals the heavenly hierarchies, the names of the angelic orders, and explains the sacred protocol of heaven — a picture of divine governance, reverence, and order.
Chapters 6–10: The Angelic Orders and the Fear of the Most High
———
Metatron said to me:
“There are angelic orders that do not sleep,
who stand in praise before the Throne of the Most High day and night.”
“They do not sit, nor turn their backs,
nor loosen their belts, nor move from their station.”
“They cry out continually,
‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts.
The whole earth is full of His glory!’”
“Each order has its own purpose —
some carry the light,
others record deeds,
others guard the heavenly gates.”
———
“There are ten levels of messengers above the earth,” Metatron explained:
Ishim – the silent ones who wait on God’s word
Erelim – mighty ones who guard the foundation of heaven
Kaddoshim – holy ones who circle the throne
Ofanim – the wheels of glory who move with the chariot
Seraphim – burning ones who cry out in flame
Malakim – messengers who carry out God’s decrees
Elim – mighty warriors of righteousness
Chashmalim – radiant ones who whisper mysteries
Bene Elohim – sons of God who praise His Name
Cherubim – guardians of the inner throne
“Each is filled with the fear of the Eternal,
and none moves apart from His command.”
———
I asked Metatron,
“What sustains the order of the heavens?”
He said,
“The fear of the Most High —
not dread, but holy reverence —
binds every star in its place
and keeps even the greatest messengers in silence before Him.”
“If not for His Word,
all would be consumed by the light of His presence.”
———
“Above the seventh heaven,” Metatron said,
“there are chambers of hidden light.”
“There dwell the scrolls of judgment,
the songs of the righteous,
and the names of those written for life.”
“No foot has entered them,
except those sent by the Eternal One for a purpose.”
“Even I, who stand at the gate,
do not cross into them without His voice.”
———
Then Metatron described the crown of the Most High:
“It is beyond all imagining,
formed of light and truth,
adorned with seventy names
and sealed with the fire of creation.”
“Upon it is written:
‘I Am that I Am —
and My glory fills the heavens and the earth.’”
“When the Most High places it upon Himself,
all the heavens tremble,
and the messengers fall on their faces.”
Metatron unveils the angelic hierarchy, showing ten ranks of messengers with specific assignments in God’s kingdom.
The fear (reverence) of God is revealed as the very force that holds heaven in order.
Enoch learns of the hidden chambers above heaven, where scrolls, songs, and names are kept in divine trust.
The Crown of God is described — a symbol of glory, truth, and universal lordship.
Metatron explains his heavenly names, transformation process, and the moment the Most High called him “My servant” before all the messengers — a scene of both humility and authority in the court of heaven.
Chapters 11–15: Seventy Names, Transformation, and the Voice of the Most High
———
Metatron said:
“When I was taken from the sons of men,
the Holy One gave me seventy names,
each reflecting a task, a mystery, or a flame.”
“He called me:
‘Little YHWH’ — not because I was His equal,
but because I carried His authority
to record, to speak, and to stand in His presence.”
“He named me:
Prince of the Divine Presence,
Scribe of the Scrolls,
Keeper of the Names,
Witness of the Ages.”
———
“I, Enoch, son of Jared,
was taken in my body and transformed.”
“My bones were turned to flame,
my sinews to fire,
my eyelids to light,
and my garments to glory.”
“Seventy times did He clothe me in radiance,
until I could stand in the courts of the Most High.”
“I was not consumed,
for His Spirit sustained me.”
———
“Then a voice went out from the Throne of Glory, saying:
‘Let Enoch, My servant, be exalted.’”
“And all the messengers bowed before me —
not to worship me,
but to honor the One who had sent me.”
“I was placed over the heavenly scribe’s chamber,
and the Books of Life were opened before me.”
“I saw every name written,
and every deed remembered.”
———
Then the messengers of flame said to the Holy One:
“Why has this one, born of woman,
been placed above us in rank and glory?”
And the voice of the Eternal answered:
“Because he walked with Me in righteousness
when the world had forgotten My ways.”
“Because he loved justice,
and turned many from destruction.”
“He is not above you in essence,
but in purpose —
for I have made him a sign to the generations.”
———
Then I bowed before the Throne and said:
“Master of all,
I am but dust and flame.
You are from eternity,
and I am the work of Your hands.”
“You have honored me,
but I do not exalt myself.”
“I sit where You command,
I speak what You give,
I remain silent where You are hidden.”
Metatron receives seventy names, each tied to a role or function in the divine court.
He recounts his transformation from mortal to heavenly being, clothed in light and sustained by the Spirit.
God’s voice declares Metatron’s exaltation before the messengers, not as an object of worship, but as a testimony of righteousness.
Metatron remains humble, recognizing his identity as servant, not equal — and pointing all glory to the Most High.
Metatron will reveal the heavenly measurements, cosmic order, and the great secrets entrusted to him — as Rabbi Ishmael continues to learn the inner workings of divine governance, mercy, and final judgment.
Chapters 16–20: The Tablets of Heaven, Cosmic Order, and the Fire of Justice
———
Metatron said:
“The Holy One showed me the dimensions of creation.
He taught me how to measure the foundations of the heavens
and the depths of the abyss.”
“I saw that the heavens were stretched like a scroll,
and the earth was suspended upon nothing.”
“From east to west is a distance no foot has walked,
yet it is held in balance by the Word.”
“I recorded the number of stars,
and the paths of their circuits —
none moves apart from its appointed gate.”
———
“There are heavenly tablets,
inscribed before the beginning of days.”
“One holds the names of the righteous,
the other the deeds of the nations.”
“Each soul is weighed by what is written —
not merely by what was done,
but by what was known, offered, and refused.”
“The Book of the Living is written in light,
and no lie can enter it.”
———
“I was shown the Chamber of Fire,
where the judgments of the Most High are sealed.”
“There burns the flame that does not consume,
but reveals every hidden thing.”
“From this chamber goes forth a voice like rushing waters,
declaring justice to the stars and silence to the proud.”
“When the righteous are vindicated,
the fire sings.
When the corrupt are exposed,
the fire weeps.”
———
“The Eternal One taught me the scroll of time —
how each generation is measured,
how days are given as seeds,
and lifetimes as fields.”
“Some sow violence,
others sow peace.”
“But the harvest belongs to the Master,
and each will reap what he has planted.”
“I saw the scales used in judgment —
not of iron, but of wisdom.”
———
“There are seven holy angels
who stand ready at the gates of judgment.”
Uriel, who reveals hidden light
Raphael, who brings healing and remembrance
Raguel, who sets right the injustice of the mighty
Michael, who defends the covenant and accuses the accuser
Sariel, who watches over the faithful and their rest
Gabriel, who delivers the decrees of the Most High
Remiel, who records the resurrection and the final reward
“These are not masters, but servants —
each executing the will of the Eternal,
whose Name alone is exalted.”
Metatron is entrusted with divine measurements — mapping the cosmic order by God’s word.
He reveals the heavenly tablets, which record not only deeds, but also intent, knowledge, and truth rejected.
The Chamber of Fire reveals and purifies — it is both the song of vindication and the sorrow of exposure.
A sacred teaching on time as a sowing field reminds us that each life is weighed.
The chapter ends with the introduction of the seven angels of judgment, whose roles reflect light, healing, justice, and final reward.
Rabbi Ishmael is shown the inner court, where praise never ceases, and where the names of the righteous are lifted daily before the Throne. These chapters focus on heavenly worship, the fire of adoration, and the breath of the sanctified ones.
Chapters 21–25: Heavenly Worship, the Names of the Righteous, and the Fire That Speaks
———
Rabbi Ishmael said:
“I saw the innermost court of the heavens,
where no foot had entered,
and where the light had no shadow.”
“There the holy ones stood in endless praise,
not weary, not silent —
for the song was their breath,
and worship their food.”
“Their voices rose like rivers,
joining into one great flame of adoration.”
“No one commanded them to sing —
they sang because He is worthy.”
———
Metatron said:
“Each day, the names of the righteous are lifted before the Throne.”
“They are spoken aloud by the messengers of remembrance,
and echoed by the winds of heaven.”
“When their names are mentioned,
a new light shines in the firmament.”
“This is their memorial before the Eternal One —
not their strength, not their riches,
but their love of truth.”
———
“I saw pillars of fire rise like trees,
and they were the praise of the Most High.”
“Each flame was the voice of a soul
who had worshipped in spirit and in truth.”
“The fire was not destruction —
it was revelation.”
“It wrapped around the Throne like a garment,
and sang of His mercy and majesty.”
“This is the offering He desires:
a heart ignited by awe.”
———
“Those who dwell in light do not breathe as men breathe.
Their breath is worship.”
“They exhale reverence,
and inhale joy.”
“They speak not of themselves,
but declare only what they have seen and heard
from the One who sits enthroned above all.”
“Even silence is worship there,
for silence before Him is full of meaning.”
———
“And I saw that even the stars sing —
not with tongues, but with movement.”
“Their orbits are praise.
Their light is proclamation.”
“Every wind, every tree, every drop of water
sends forth sound before the throne.”
“All creation is drawn into harmony,
when the name of the Most High is lifted up.”
“The righteous join this song,
not because they are commanded,
but because their hearts have been tuned by love.”
Rabbi Ishmael is shown the inner court of heaven, where worship never ceases.
The names of the righteous are lifted daily before God, bringing light into the heavens.
Worship is seen as fire, breath, and movement — not ritual, but relational reverence.
Even creation itself sings, participating in a cosmic liturgy of love and awe.
These chapters emphasize that in heaven, true worship is not commanded — it is volunteered from hearts fully alive to the glory of God.
Metatron will explain the scrolls of the righteous and wicked, the power of repentance, and the boundaries of divine mercy. The focus returns to earthly souls, their choices, and the final outcome written in the books of heaven.
Chapters 26–30: The Scrolls of Heaven, the Weighing of Souls, and the Power of Turning Back
———
Metatron said:
“This is the scroll of the righteous —
written in fire, bound in truth,
and kept beneath the gaze of the Most High.”
“Every act of mercy is recorded.
Every quiet prayer is written in gold.”
“Even the sighs of the humble
are preserved like precious oil.”
“These names are not written once,
but renewed daily in light.”
———
“And this,” he said, “is the scroll of the wicked.”
“It is heavy and dark,
filled with deeds done in secret and spoken in pride.”
“Their names are written in ash,
and their record is sorrowful to read.”
“Yet,” he said, pausing,
“it is not sealed forever.”
“For the Most High waits patiently,
and delights in those who turn from darkness.”
———
“Let it be known,” said Metatron,
“that repentance shakes the heavens.”
“When one who is far turns back to the Most High,
the angels of accusation fall silent,
and the messengers of mercy rise in joy.”
“One act of genuine turning
can erase a thousand lines of guilt.”
“Not because justice is denied,
but because mercy has spoken louder.”
———
“The Most High weighs all things —
not by the greatness of the deed,
but by the purity of the heart.”
“A small kindness done in secret
may outweigh a thousand offerings shouted from rooftops.”
“The scales are not of iron,
but of wisdom and fire.”
“And no bribe can move the hand that holds them.”
———
Then a voice echoed through the chamber:
“Woe to those who trust in their own name,
and build towers of praise for themselves.”
“Woe to those who silence the weak,
and use the scrolls for gain.”
“For their names shall be shaken,
and their memory shall pass like smoke.”
“But blessed are those who tremble at the Word,
and rejoice in mercy.”
Metatron reveals the two heavenly scrolls: one for the righteous, written in light, and one for the wicked, written in sorrow.
Repentance is revealed as a powerful force — it silences judgment and activates mercy.
Deeds are weighed not merely by their size but by the truth of the heart that acts.
The proud are warned, while the humble and repentant are uplifted as the true inheritors of God’s remembrance.
Metatron reveals the heavenly cities, the gatekeepers of each realm, and the cosmic architecture of divine government — where every entrance is guarded by wisdom and every level resonates with justice.
Chapters 31–36: Heavenly Gates, Cosmic Guardians, and the Order of the Upper Realms
———
Metatron said:
“There are seven heavenly cities,
each founded upon pillars of light,
and guarded by the word of the Most High.”
“They are not made of stone,
but of praise, justice, and wisdom.”
“The righteous dwell in them as sojourners,
until the time of the great gathering.”
“Each city reflects a different glory —
mercy, truth, endurance, peace, joy, holiness, and knowledge.”
———
“At the entrance of each city is a gate,
and each gate is kept by a watcher appointed from before time.”
“No one passes by force.
Each must bear the seal of their calling,
and walk in the light of what is written.”
“Some gates are opened by worship,
others by perseverance,
and some only by the wounds of love.”
“The watchmen are not merely guards —
they are intercessors who know the weight of names.”
———
“Each of the chief messengers holds a key —
not of metal, but of truth.”
“These keys unlock realms of glory,
revelations for appointed seasons,
and doors to deeper trust.”
“No key opens what is not yet time to reveal.”
“I was given one such key —
the key to the storehouse of remembrance —
that the righteous may not be forgotten.”
———
“Within the cities are squares of light,
gathering places where the righteous meet,
where scrolls are read aloud
and the names of the faithful are spoken.”
“Here the councils of the redeemed are seated —
not to judge, but to rejoice.”
“Their robes are not of linen,
but of joy woven with endurance.”
“They speak not of themselves,
but declare the greatness of the One who brought them through.”
———
“Surrounding the Throne of the Most High
are thrones of honor,
prepared for those who overcame.”
“Each throne is assigned a guardian —
an elder messenger who has served for ages
in truth, not ambition.”
“These guardians teach those who are seated,
not as masters, but as servants of memory.”
“Their crowns are inscribed with one word:
‘Faithful.’”
———
“In the seventh heaven, there is a bell of light
that sounds only once in an age.”
“Its chime shakes the cities,
awakens sleeping scrolls,
and calls the humble to rejoice.”
“It is not heard by the proud,
nor perceived by the distracted.”
“But the wise lift their heads when it sounds,
for it means that a new season has begun —
a gate has opened,
and a scroll has been unsealed.”
Metatron describes the seven heavenly cities, each founded on a core virtue of divine character.
Gates and their angelic watchers guard access, requiring hearts rightly aligned to pass through.
Heavenly keys are given only for specific times and purposes — unlocking realms of memory, trust, and destiny.
Thrones, councils, and garments all speak to endurance, joy, and faithfulness — never self-glory.
A cosmic bell in the seventh heaven announces divine transition — heard only by those tuned to God's rhythm.
Metatron unveils the hidden scrolls, the anointing of prophets, and the heavenly response to intercession — revealing how heaven moves in response to faith, fasting, and truth spoken on earth.
Chapters 37–40: The Scrolls of Calling, Prophetic Anointing, and Heaven’s Response to Earth
———
Metatron said:
“There are scrolls kept in the upper chambers of heaven
that no eye has seen, and no hand has touched,
except those appointed by the Eternal One.”
“These are the scrolls of calling —
written before birth,
sealed with silence,
and opened in due time.”
“Each contains the path of one who will awaken others,
often through pain,
always through purpose.”
———
“When the time comes,
a prophet is called by name in the courts of heaven.”
“The oil of purpose is poured out upon their soul,
and fire is placed upon their tongue.”
“They see what others cannot,
and feel what others refuse.”
“They are not chosen for strength,
but for willingness.”
“And when they speak truth in a hostile world,
the heavens record their words as incense.”
———
“Do not think heaven is far,” said Metatron.
“When a just man weeps,
the heavens tremble.”
“When the poor are crushed,
the messengers write.”
“When one stands alone in truth,
the gates of heaven are stirred,
and the Voice speaks:
‘Who will rise with him?’”
“Even a whisper of trust
reaches the ears of the Most High.”
———
“There is a chamber,” said Metatron,
“where the scrolls of suffering are stored —
written not in ink,
but in tears.”
“Each act of endurance,
each refusal to curse the Most High in pain,
each secret act of kindness in affliction,
is remembered.”
“And beside these are the scrolls of reward,
still sealed —
for their time has not yet come.”
“But when the Anointed One rises to judge,
they shall be opened,
and the faithful shall be crowned with joy.”
Metatron reveals the hidden scrolls of calling, each containing the life mission of a soul chosen to carry truth into a broken world.
Prophets are anointed in heaven, not for prestige but for perseverance, marked by fire and divine purpose.
Heaven hears the earth: even a single act of trust or injustice echoes upward, and all is recorded.
The scrolls of suffering are held in reverence, written in tears — soon to be unveiled with eternal reward.
These next chapters unveil the heavenly garments of the righteous, the crown of the humble, and the divine pattern of reward — a concluding vision of how heaven remembers, restores, and robes those who walked in faith.
Chapters 41–45: Robes of Light, Crowns of Endurance, and the Reward of the Humble
———
Metatron said:
“There is a treasury in the heavens
where garments are stored —
robes not made by hands,
but woven from light, tears, and truth.”
“Each robe is shaped according to the soul who shall wear it —
no two are alike.”
“They are given to those
who loved what was right
and walked humbly with their God.”
———
“I saw the crowns of endurance —
radiant and weightless,
yet filled with eternal honor.”
“Each was marked not by gold,
but by the name of the Overcomer.”
“They are not given to the strong,
but to those who endured the fire
without losing love.”
“Their thorns shall become their jewels,
and their pain shall be remembered in praise.”
———
“The Most High forgets nothing —
but He remembers most deeply
the things done in secret.”
“A cup of water,
a hidden fast,
a gentle word when no one sees —
these rise like fragrance.”
“The proud are forgotten quickly.
But the humble remain forever.”
———
“And I heard a new song,
sung only by those
who had walked through darkness
with clean hands.”
“It was not taught by angels,
but learned through suffering.”
“It spoke of the mercy of the Most High,
and the faithfulness of those
who would not let go of His name.”
“This song rises above all others,
and it is pleasing to the One seated on the throne.”
———
“In the great day of revealing,” Metatron said,
“the Anointed One shall stand,
and call forth the names no one knew.”
“The ones who were never seen,
who were mocked or cast aside —
they shall be lifted first.”
“The last shall be first,
and the hidden shall be crowned.”
“He will say to them:
‘You are My joy —
for you did not seek the praise of men,
but walked in the quiet fire of trust.’”
The robes of the righteous are made of light and humility, each uniquely fitted for its wearer.
Crowns of endurance are stored for those who pressed on through hardship without bitterness.
Heaven treasures every hidden act of love — true greatness is remembered in silence and sincerity.
A song of the justified is sung only by those who suffered and stayed faithful.
The Anointed One Himself will honor the forgotten and unseen, revealing them as heaven’s joy.
These final chapters complete the scroll of 3 Enoch, revealing the ultimate union of heaven and earth, the restoration of all things, and the final enthronement of the Anointed One over both visible and invisible realms.
Chapters 46–50: The Restoration of All Things and the Glory of the Anointed One
———
Metatron said:
“In the day of fulfillment,
the footstool of the Eternal One shall rest upon the earth.”
“The veil shall be lifted,
and the heavens shall open like a scroll.”
“The righteous will rejoice,
for what they believed by faith,
they will now see in glory.”
“Creation will no longer groan,
for the Breath of the Holy One shall fill every corner.”
———
“Then the Anointed One,
who was hidden in the bosom of the Father,
shall appear in glory.”
“He will sit upon the throne prepared for Him
before the foundations of the world.”
“He shall judge in righteousness,
restore what was broken,
and comfort those who mourned in hope.”
“The kings of the earth shall bow,
and the wise shall lift their eyes,
saying, ‘This is the One our hearts longed for.’”
———
“And I saw the messengers close the scrolls.”
“Not in sorrow,
but in joy —
for all had been revealed.”
“The scroll of the righteous was lifted,
and a crown was placed upon it.”
“The scroll of the wicked was sealed,
and cast into silence —
for mercy had been offered,
and justice had been fulfilled.”
———
“Then the voice of the Eternal spoke, saying:
‘Let the invisible and visible rejoice together.’”
“The stars sang with men,
the trees clapped their hands,
and every creature knew its Maker.”
“The Anointed One stood in the center,
and His light filled all things.”
“No temple was needed,
for the presence of the Most High
was the light and the sanctuary of the people.”
———
Metatron turned to me and said:
“Blessed are those who read and keep these words.”
“Blessed are those who walk unseen,
give without being asked,
speak truth without applause,
and love without reward.”
“Their names shall not fade.
Their memory shall not die.
For the Most High has written them
in the scroll of joy.”
“And when the age is renewed,
they shall rise with the Anointed One,
clothed in light,
and reign in peace forever.”
The footstool of God touches the earth, signaling the end of separation between realms.
The Anointed One is enthroned in glory, as judge, restorer, and joy-giver.
The heavenly scrolls are sealed: righteousness exalted, wickedness silenced.
The visible and invisible are united, and the presence of God becomes the light of creation.
Metatron closes the scroll with a blessing over the faithful, affirming that their unseen acts have eternal weight.
