Exorcistic Psalm Fragments
[Archive witness: an ancient protective or ritual text, preserved as historical evidence — not doctrine, and not for practice.]
Psalms composed to drive away harmful spirits, among them the apocryphal psalms ascribed to David found at Qumran, recited over the afflicted. Representative wording:
“Of David, against the spirits. [Text missing] When a spirit of harm comes upon you, you shall say to it: Who are you, O offspring of man and of the seed of the holy ones? Your face is a face of nothing, and your horns are horns of a dream. You are darkness and not light, wickedness and not righteousness. [Line damaged] The LORD will bind you down in the deepest place, beneath the great abyss, in the darkness that has no light.”
And the afflicted will answer, Amen, amen;
and the LORD will send a strong angel to guard him,
the LORD who guards Israel,
who neither slumbers nor sleeps.
