Doctrine of Addai — Prayer and Witness Extracts

[Archive witness: extracts of prayer and testimony from the Doctrine of Addai, the Syriac account of the bringing of the gospel to Edessa.]

It is told that Abgar, king of Edessa, sent to Jesus, asking him to come and heal him; and that after the ascension the apostle sent Addai, who came to Edessa and preached and healed in the name of Jesus the Anointed. [Text missing]

Addai taught the people: worship not the sun and the moon and the host of heaven, which are servants and not gods, but worship the living God who made them. And he prayed: O Lord, establish this city in your truth, and let the faith you have planted here not be uprooted forever. [Line damaged]

Blessed is the one who believed without seeing;

blessed is the city that received the word of life.

Glory to the Father who sent,

and to the Son who was sent,

and to the Spirit who sanctifies.
