Appendix L: Men and Women in the Image of God

1. Sacred Principle

In the very beginning, God created humanity in His image — male and female together. This divine image was not given to one gender above the other, but shared in equal dignity, mutual purpose, and relational harmony. Over time, cultural distortions and religious hierarchies veiled this truth. Women were often reduced to silence, subordination, or shame — but this was never the design of Eden. The Bible Restored project recovers the truth: God’s image is reflected fully in both male and female, and His mission in the world requires both, side by side.

2. Creation in Unity

Genesis 1:27 — “In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.”

Genesis 2:18 — “It is not good for man to be alone; I will make a helper corresponding to him.”

The Hebrew word for "helper" is ezer — used elsewhere for God Himself as Israel’s help (e.g., Psalm 33:20). It does not mean subordinate or assistant.

The phrase "corresponding to him" (Hebrew: kenegdo) implies equal and relational balance. Together, man and woman were:

Blessed,

Commissioned to multiply,

Called to steward creation.

3. Distortion Through Sin

In Genesis 3, after sin enters, brokenness enters the relationship:

“Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (Genesis 3:16)

This is not God’s command, but a consequence of the fall — a description of what sin broke, not a prescription for how men and women should relate.

4. Jesus and Women

Jesus radically uplifted women in a culture that silenced them:

Spoke with women in public (John 4),

Defended women caught in sin (John 8),

Had female disciples who supported His ministry (Luke 8:1–3),

First revealed His resurrection to women (John 20) — making them the first messengers of the Gospel.

Jesus never restricted women’s voice or dignity — He restored it.

5. Paul and Women — Reinterpreted

Paul is often misunderstood as silencing women. But when understood properly, he affirms unity and mutuality:

Galatians 3:28 — “There is neither male nor female… you are all one in the Anointed One.”

Romans 16 — Paul praises multiple women as coworkers, deacons, apostles, and leaders (e.g., Phoebe, Junia, Priscilla).

The so-called "silence passages" (e.g., 1 Corinthians 14, 1 Timothy 2) must be read in cultural context — responding to specific disruptions, not creating eternal law.

Paul’s Pharisaic training shaped his structured instructions, such as those in 1 Timothy 2:11–15, which can appear legalistic when removed from their Ephesian context, where false teachings linked to Artemis worship likely caused disruption. These were not meant as universal laws but as guidance for peace and trust in a specific community. Later misinterpretations cast them as rigid rules, dimming the Spirit’s freedom and the equal dignity of women. As we restore Paul’s intent, we see his heart for mutuality, guided by the Set-Apart Spirit, not hierarchy. See Chapter 5, “What Went Wrong?” for how his letters were misread as a new law.

6. Equal Image, Distinct Calling

Men and women are not identical, but they are equal.

Shared

Distinct

Image of God

Embodied expression (masculine/feminine)

Dignity and destiny

Unique roles shaped by gifting, not gender alone

Access to Spirit, gifts, and authority

Called to partnership, not competition

The Spirit gifts as He wills — not by gender (1 Corinthians 12:11).

7. Sacred Conclusion

God created man and woman in His image — together, not separately. Each reflects something sacred, and together they reveal the fullness of divine beauty. In Christ, the curse is broken. The wall is removed. The partnership is restored. The Church must become a place where both voices are heard, both callings are honored, and the full image of God is reflected again.
