Pseudo-Hecataeus — Fragments

[Fragments in praise of the Jews and their law, circulated under the name of Hecataeus and preserved in quotation.]

The Jews worship one God, the maker of heaven and earth, and they make no image of him, holding that he cannot be likened to anything seen. Their priests are set over justice as well as worship, and the people obey them. They hold firmly to their law, and will suffer torture and death rather than transgress it; for they reckon it noble to die for the commandments of their God. [Text missing]

Their city Jerusalem is great and fair, and in it stands the temple of God, with an altar of unhewn stones, and within it no image at all, and no tree planted, for so their law commands. [Line damaged]
