Jannes and Jambres
Jannes and Jambres
[The book of the two Egyptian magicians who withstood Moses; preserved only in fragments.]
These are Jannes and Jambres, the magicians of Egypt, who stood before Pharaoh and withstood Moses and Aaron, matching sign for sign by their secret arts, until they could no longer stand, and said, This is the finger of God. [Text missing]
And Jannes fell sick and knew that he would die, and he said to his brother Jambres, [Line damaged] I have striven against men who are mighty, for the power of their God is with them. And he died, and went down to the place of the dead.
And Jambres by his arts called up the soul of his brother from below; and the soul of Jannes answered him out of the torment, and said: Rightly was I judged, for I set myself against the servants of God. Do not strive as I strove, lest you come to this place of fire and pain. [Text missing] You too shall die, and come where I am.
