Aristeas the Exegete — Fragments

[A fragment concerning Job, preserved in quotation.]

Job dwelt in the land of Uz, on the borders of Edom and Arabia; and his name was first Jobab. He was a just man, rich in flocks and herds, upright and God-fearing. There came upon him great misfortunes: he lost his goods, his children, and his health, and was covered with sores. Yet he did not sin, nor charge God with wrong, but endured; and afterward God restored to him more than he had before, and he lived in honor to a great age. He was of the line of Esau, the fifth from Abraham. [Text missing]
