The Visions of Amram

[An Aramaic vision of Amram, father of Moses; preserved in fragments.]

A copy of the book of the words of the visions of Amram son of Qahat son of Levi: all that he made known to his sons, and that he charged them, in the day of his death. [Text missing]

In my vision, the vision of a dream, I saw two who were contending over me, and they said, “We have authority over you, and we rule over all the sons of Adam.” And I answered, “Who are you, that you have such power over me?” And I looked, and behold, two of them: their appearance was terrible, and they contended for me.

I asked the one whose appearance was darkness, “Who are you, and what is your name?” And he said that he ruled over all darkness; and his three names were given. [Line damaged] And I asked the other, whose face was full of light, and he said that he ruled over all that is light; and he too had three names.

And one of them said to me, “Which of us do you choose to rule over you?” And I lifted my eyes and looked: the one was a ruler of darkness, given authority over all darkness; and the other a ruler of light, given authority over all light, and over all the sons of righteousness. [Text missing] For all the sons of light shall go to the light, to eternal joy and gladness; and all the sons of darkness shall go to the darkness and to death and destruction.
